Our Story

In 2012, the school I worked for needed a new Learning Management System. Our old one was being discontinued, and during the search I attended a small demonstration at the University of Illinois for a company I’d never heard of before—D2L. Their LMS amazed me. I came back excited to share it with my colleagues, and after testing a few platforms, our campus decided to adopt what would later be known as Brightspace.

Not long after we signed on, one issue kept coming up: the built-in attendance tool was difficult to use. In fact, it quickly became the number one reason faculty reached out for support. After some thought, I told a colleague, “I can make a new attendance tool that integrates into the LMS.”

We gathered faculty input, outlined what the tool needed to do, and I built the first version—tailored to our SIS and faculty workflows. It worked. Faculty were happy. I shared that tool, along with a few others I’d developed, at D2L’s Fusion conference. The response was overwhelming. Schools started contacting my boss asking for release time so I could recreate this attendance tool for them. That was the moment You-Attend was born.

Working nights and weekends, I built You-Attend from the ground up. What started as one person’s side project has grown into a platform now trusted by schools across North America. To date, over 100,000 people have used You-Attend, and together they’ve recorded more than 6 million attendance entries.

Our journey has always been about helping people. That’s why we give back by donating 10% of all proceeds to Matthew 25, a local organization in our community that helps people rebuild their lives and re-enter society with dignity.
